Top 5 Asheville Travel Happenings of 2010

Only one more day to go in good-ol’ 2010, and only two more nights before we welcome 2011. We thought it would be nice to spend these last few hours of the year reflecting on what made 2010 such an amazing year to visit Asheville (and what will continue to make it a great travel destination in 2011).

5. Beer City USA: With more craft breweries per capita than any city in the US–Asheville is fast becoming the micro-brewing capitol of the Southeast. In a poll on Examiner.com that received more than 19,000 votes, Asheville was named “Beer City USA” (beating out Portland, Oregon). With 10 distinct breweries, five beer festivals, a world-renowned specialty beer store and popular brewery tours, there is no shortage of opportunities to kick back and taste the passion of Asheville’s rapidly evolving brew culture.

4. Pack Square Park: The city’s historical center was transformed into a beautiful new 6.5 acre park, which opened this spring. Buzzing with a schedule of cultural events and live music, Pack Square Park is now the place to be in Asheville in spring and summer. Visitors can relax on grassy terraces and enjoy multiple performance spaces, water features and scenic views. Surrounded by boutiques, galleries, pubs and independent eateries, the new park features work by regional artists, an interactive water fountain (Splashville!), a large amphitheater adorned with a steel pergola and handmade tiles, and a bronze-fountain centerpiece that reflects Asheville’s famous Art Deco skyline.

3.Antler Hill Village: This spring America’s Largest Home celebrated the grand opening of a new pedestrian-friendly village with historic exhibition space, village green with live entertainment, dining, shopping and a new outdoor adventure center. As part of this project, Biltmore Winery was also enhanced to offer a newly-designed tour and tasting areas. At Antler Hill Village, guests will learn more about the Vanderbilt family and George Vanderbilt’s interest in agriculture and the outdoors, as well as his legacy of making Biltmore self-sustaining.

2. Moogfest: This three-day festival of music celebrating inventor and Asheville resident Bob Moog was the talk of the town through much of the fall. Acts such as Massive Attack, Big Boi, and Jonsi drew music-lovers from across the Southeast, and publicity from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, as well as many music blogs. Scheduling the festival over Halloween weekend also made for some pretty wild costume parties.

1. The Obama's Romantic Weekend Getaway: In April, Asheville played host to the First Couple for a weekend away, including a stay at the Grove Park Inn, lunch at 12 Bones Smokehouse, and a hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. And don't forget the Secret Service Beer Run! Check out their itinerary.

Happy New Year everyone! And we hope to see you in Asheville in 2011.

Farm-to-Freezer-to-Table: Put the tailgate market in your freezer

Yes, the growing season is coming to a close. And this is the last weekend for the tailgate markets in the Asheville area. But if you get a little blue when you think about the end of fresh produce, then the folks over at Winter Sun Farms would be happy to brighten your day.

Winter Sun Farms has created a unique sort of CSA program to bring you through the colder months. Once a month (Dec.-Mar.), members of the Winter Share program can pick up a box of frozen local produce, including: tomato puree, green beans, whole strawberries, minestrone mix, edamame, and butternut squash puree. And of course, their website also features recipes in case you don't know what to do with these things.

The Winter Share program operates out of Blue Ridge Food Ventures, the largest food incubator in North Carolina. Basically, people who are interested in starting a food business (selling their hot sauce, jams, bamboo pickles, etc.), but who don't have access to a commercial kitchen, can rent the BRFV kitchen to do their preparation in a space that is well-equipped and up on all the health codes. So the Winter Sun Farms program partners with local farmers to freeze, package, and deliver the summer bounty during winter's lull.

Staying in Asheville for the winter? Have a friend who likes fruits and veggies? Consider Winter Share for yourself or as a gift. One more way the Foodtopian Society is there for you, all year 'round.

Asheville gets some Big Apple love

Back in October the New York Times ran a great piece about everything you can do with 36 Hours in Asheville. As it turns out, you can do a lot, including visiting a tailgate market, trying some local Asheville beers, checking out some hot new restaurants, and even making a stop by our summer drum circle.

This week, the Times had some other wonderful things to say about the "Paris of the South," starting with a review of the new boutique Hotel Indigo, located downtown within easy walking distance of much of the 36-hour itinerary (and the Visitor Center as well).

Travel writer Ingrid Williams followed this up with a wonderful profile of the River Arts District, highlighting the Wedge Brewery, the new businesses at 372 Depot St., and 12 Bones, as well as a handful of the talent-filled studios the district is named for.

PS: Don't forget about our Bboy Santa Contest... you could win a vacation starter pack in Asheville!
